Historical Castles

Finally got around to adding a b&w of the castles. Would appreciate any thoughts on it. I have cropped it from the original and hope it is a better comp. Strictly I should redo it all from the RAW file as I have since been told about the benefits of saving in 16 bits rather than 8 especially when you need to change levels etc. These were all saved only at 8bits. 16bits
doubles the size of the file though but once you have changed the levels you can then resave as 8bits. If anyone is interested I shall endeavour to explain.

In the first picture Cromwell's Castle is seen from the Tresco side on the day we walked around the north end of Tresco.

In the second picture Cromwell's Castle on Tesco near the water as seen from Bryher. King Charles Castle is seen on top of the hill. Now for the lesson: The strategic importance of the Scillies can be seen from the forts built for its protection. King Charles Castle and the Blockhouse were constructed around 1550 to defend the islands against Spanish and French attack. In 1648, after the end of the English Civil War, Scilly briefly joined the uprising against Cromwell's Parliament. Pirates and privateers preying on trading ships in the English Channel became regular visitors, to such an extent that the Dutch declared war on the islands and sent an invasion fleet. Alarmed at the potential loss of Scilly, the English Parliament sent its own forces to defeat the Dutch. A few years later Cromwell's Castle was built, replacing King Charles' in a better position, closer to the water as the cannonballs from the castle at the top did not reach the ships in the water!

I changed the date of this to the future date of Aug 18th and it disappeared and was scheduled to reappear on that date. I thought it might be confusing since you already had been emailed this and the link did not get through. I tried to make it come up but it seems that future posts will not now show until due date. Unless you know otherwise Mary. So I will try to remember to change this to correct date once that date arrives!! Pheww!!!

now this is wonderful. and of course you mean sir oliver cromwell? I don't remember ever hearing where he lived, talk about being out in front of the fighting. 1st line of defence? very interesting thank you.

Actually he was never made a Sir - probably because the only person to make anyone a Knight (Sir) is the monarch and he defeated the monarch - beheaded him even so no I don't think he was ever knighted.
But yes it was definitely Oliver Cromwell. He never actually visited this castle it is just that it was built when his parliament was in charge and there was no king at that time. He came from Huntingdon but he would have been in London while he was Lord Protector.

No, that's a new feature--and maybe they don't email them out til the future date either? Or Do they since you published them first.

Confusing. They should give you a choice. DId everything else disappear too? I haven\t looked, I guess I should--there are advantages and disadvantages to that.

BUT--these are GORGEOUS!!!! I lOVE THEM--how beautiful and romantic!

They are both stunning shots--I hope you posted them to BP!

I just tried again and all is back working as it was. Must have been a temporary blip - I tried several times. Praps people have complained so they changed it back again.
Thanks gals for your comments!

It could be a nice feature if they gave you a CHOICE!

Great shots! :-D :-D

Yes I did post them to BP. These days I would be quite excited just to get an Editors Pick!

I agree re the scheduled feature. Funny thing though I just posted that last close one of The Moorings on its own and it did the same thing and would not show as it said "scheduled". So fiddle I then added it to the first two pics and it came out OK. Should have done that first.

WOW I love these. I'm back looking at them again! SUPER!

I've done a b&w version of the bottom one that looks quite dramatic. Maybe I'll get around to trying same with the top one. They didn't get anywhere on BP and neither did my lilies even though I redid them they only got an editors pick. But after a drought of about a year I finally got a finalist last month.

Mary Stebbins Taitt said...

Are you going to post the BW (or did you?)

Congratulations on your finalist. WOw! It must be getting really hard to do well, because you have so many nice pix. I guess it's just as well I've been so busy, or I'd just get frustrated!

I just LOVE these castle shots.

That's sort of strange that your visual DNA is the same as mine. Weird.

(I mean there are so many choices.)

I had the same thoughts as you re the bedroom. Didn't like any of the others so plumped for the books. Not sure where there would be enough room for clothes in there though - maybe on the floor?

I've just posted a b&w version of the castles and would appreciate any comments. It doesn't appear to send an email out when you add a new pic within the same post so you guys need to go to the blog to see it on this link. If you have time of course.

Just off on my constitutional walk delivering 120 leaflets around the village.

I'm not really so selfless as I try to make out.

Whay hey CPS starts again on Tuesday. Can't wait. See you there Gina. Oh by the way CPS (Colchester Photographic Society - please make note as I will write this in full only once) had a picture stolen from Colchester Library during the exhibition. Some guy set the fire alarm off and had a big bag ready to pop the framed picture in and went off with it. It was of a Sax player standing in the street collecting money and playing of course. The guy who stole it was caught on CCTV and was a BIG ISSUE seller. BIG ISSUE is a paper sold by homeless people. Delia, whose pic it was laughed out loud when told about it. Doesn't say much for the rest of us does it. Ours weren't even worth stealing!!

Mary Stebbins Taitt said...

The BW is VERY nice.

Too bad you couldn't just move the castle over slightly to the right.

But I like it, lots of nice texture and detail.

Mary Stebbins Taitt said...

WOW! That's an interesting story about the guy whole stole the picture!

I went back and studied the pix, and the BW is not the same as the color one. For some reason, I like the comp of the color one just a frog-hair better. Seems slightly more dynamically balanced to me?

Mary Stebbins Taitt said...

Maybe you just cropped it. (?)

But if so, that patch of sand was balancing the castle a little somehow maybe? (Or am I crazy?)

OK, never mind.

I like it.

Sometimes it does your head in thinking about composition! I thought I'd improved it by cropping it but now I think you are right. If I can find time I will go back to the original and redo it.

Dunno--was getting confused thinking about it! Sorry! :-(

I DO LIKE IT!
